Pile trimming in Brisbane that keeps the cappers moving
Piles are poured or driven long on purpose, so every pile comes up proud and has to go back to design cut off level before the cap or capping beam goes on. Three things at once: break back to cut off, keep the starter bars straight and undamaged for the cap tie in, and finish with a sound clean face ready for the pour. Get one wrong and the engineer will not sign off.
Our Queensland depot is at Slacks Creek, between Brisbane and Logan just off the Pacific Motorway, so crew and plant are local. Where an inner city basement or podium job puts the piles in tight access under propping, that is breaker and jackhammer work finished by hand under dust and noise controls. Where an open industrial or civil site out at the TradeCoast, Rocklea or Ipswich has driven precast in long runs, the excavator mounted cropper does most of it.
Work in Brisbane runs across the CBD and Spring Hill, South Brisbane, West End and Woolloongabba, Fortitude Valley, Newstead and Bowen Hills, Hamilton and Northshore, the TradeCoast and airport precinct, Eagle Farm and Pinkenba, Rocklea and Acacia Ridge, Logan, Ipswich, Springfield and Ripley, and civil sites along the Gateway, Pacific and Ipswich motorway corridors. We work for builders, piling contractors and civil contractors, and also do the detailed excavation and demolition ahead of the rig.
Driven precast, bored and CFA, screw piles: three different jobs
- Driven precast piles. Square or round precast driven to set, high strength concrete, heavy reinforcement. Cropped square without cracking the pile below the cut line.
- Bored and CFA piles. Cast in the ground, so the head is the softest, dirtiest concrete in the pile. Easier to break but messier, and the spoil has to go somewhere. Breaker and jackhammer, finished by hand.
- Screw and helical piles. Steel, so a cutting job. Cut to level so the cap plate can be welded or bolted on.
For a method and a rate we ask for pile type, count, size and cut off level relative to the working platform.
Method and plant
Method is picked to suit the pile type, not whatever is on the truck.
- Hydraulic pile croppers, excavator mounted. Fastest and cleanest on driven precast and uniform bored piles, no hand vibration, operator out of the firing line. We are adding units.
- Excavator mounted breakers. The workhorse on bored, CFA and oversized or irregular piles. Needs a careful operator or the concrete below the cut line shatters.
- Compressor and Hilti jackhammers. The last part of the trim, tight access, piles inside a building.
- Saw cut control line. Where tolerance is tight or the pile shows in finished work, Perfect Concrete Care saw cuts a line at cut off level first so the break stops there. Same group, an internal call, not a subcontract.
Bars knocked during driving are straightened by hand; we work down to the bars, not through them. Spoil goes into our own tippers and skips as the trim moves, so trimming and spoil removal can be one price.
Working with the piling contractor and the programme
We follow the rig at a set distance, close enough that the cappers always have trimmed piles in front of them and far enough back to stay out of the rig crew's way, worked out against your programme. Hundreds of piles on a civil site or a big basement in Brisbane are a run, not call outs.
Per pile on consistent volume work, day rate on small numbers, awkward access or working around other trades. We have two upcoming jobs with a thousand driven 400 by 400 piles between them.
If the starter bars on a pile are already bent or broken when we get to it, that goes to you on paper before any work starts on that pile.
Safety, paperwork and frequently asked
Trimming runs under our own SWMS for concrete cutting and breaking: water suppression, on tool extraction and respiratory protection for respirable crystalline silica. Sent to the head contractor on request. Under an existing structure it is hand work with jackhammers plus dust and noise controls.
How fast can you give a rate?
Quickly once we have the pile schedule.
Can you keep up with the rig?
Tell us its daily output and we size the crew and plant to sit behind it.
Is there a minimum job size?
No. Small counts go on a day rate, volume runs per pile. Builders, piling contractors and civil contractors only.
Brisbane and South East Queensland work runs from our Slacks Creek depot to the same method and standards as our Sydney work, under the same SWMS. The project pages on this site are NSW jobs at this stage, so ask for Queensland references when you call. Full method on the pile trimming service page.
